Like gorilla trekking, habituation experience equally is guided by a number of set rules and regulations. GORILLA TREKKING RULES AND REGULATIONS

Are you planning to go for gorilla trekking and you do not know if there are set rules and regulations one has to follow while on the trek? Well, whether you are planning to embark on a gorilla trek for the first time to Uganda/Rwanda or even you are making for the second time, there are set measure every visitor must observe at all times while in search of the rare mountain gorillas. A maximum of 8 tourists are permitted to track only 1 habituated gorilla family. This measure is mainly aimed to reducing cases of behavioral disturbance on these endangered creatures and also higher risks of exposing them to human infectious diseases. Upon finding the habituated gorilla group that is assigned to you, you have an hour of magical encounter with these beautiful creature and for you to take their pictures, explore their general behavior. This applies whether you are planning to track gorillas in the DR Congo, Rwanda or Uganda.

Also, a distance of 7 meters must be observed all the time while tracking these creatures. Avoid body contact with gorillas and this rule is of great significance as it helps protect these critically endangered creatures from spread of human infectious diseases.

Smoking, eating or drinking is never allowed while on gorilla trek. Such acts put these creatures at higher risk of catching human infectious diseases.

When the gorillas charge against you or get irritated, make sure that you stand still and avoid direct eye contact, never try as this puts you into more risks. Do as your guide tells and that is why you have to keep around with your guide and group.

While taking photos of mountain gorillas, flash cameras are not welcome and if yours has, make sure that you have turned it off before taking photos. Flash lights tend to scare them off or make them irritated and they can easily cause harm to you.

You are advised to move slowly and keenly. Avoid waving or pointing arms at the gorillas.

Do not touch gorillas even when they get close to you.

HABITUATED GORILLA GROUPS IN RWANDA

For any plans to track mountain gorillas in Rwanda, then Volcanoes National Park should be a must to include in your travel plan. This protected area makes up part of the Virunga Conservation Area which also covers parts of the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda. For visitors on gorilla safari, you have 10 families that have been habituated and readily available for gorilla trekking. This represent about 80 permits that are available each day for purchase in Rwanda and each permit costs $1500.

Below is a list of habituated gorilla families in Rwanda.

The Susa ‘A’ family

If it is extra-ordinary experience that you wish to be part of while on gorilla safari in Rwanda then the Susa A group is that one family you need not to miss to explore. This group is a famous group that Dian Fossey also conducted her research for many years till she was murdered mysteriously in 1985. It also comprised of 40 members making it one of the largest families at a time. Due to fights and splits, the number of gorillas in this group reduced drastically. Today, there are not more than 28 gorillas that thrive within this family with 3 silverbacks. It is from here that Poppy whom Dian Fossey had studied lives. This family derived its name from River Susa that flows through this gorilla family. A trek to see group members of this group can be challenging and you need to be physically fit.

Karisimbi group

This group is also best known as the Susa ‘B’ a splitter family from the main Susa family. About 15 members make up this group and they straddle at the base of Mount Karisimbi and you will still need to be physically fit. Karisimbi volcano stands at altitude of about 4507 meters and it is the highest of all the Virunga Volcanoes.

Sabyinyo group

This group features as easiest to track in Volcanoes National Park. It is headed by the massive Guhonda silverback one of the strongest silverbacks in this protected area. It is also a smaller family and in 2014, about 8 members thrived in this group. Its group members spend most of their time around the gentle foothill slopes of Sabyinyo volcano and Gahinga volcano.

Amahoro group

The word ‘Amahoro’ denotes ‘peace’ and for peaceful gorilla treks then consider this group a must to track and you will have ample time with these magnificent creatures in the wild. Over 17 individuals make up this group and they usually roam around the slopes of Visoke Volcano. Ubumwe silverback gorilla family is the gentle silverback however, he lost his group members to Charles in the Umubano family.

Agashya

This group is also known as Group 13 the fact that it originally started with only 13 members. The word Agashya denotes special and indeed it is a special group of its own. Currently, it made up of 25 members with 1 silverback. In most cases, they wonder around foothills of Gahinga and Sabyinyo volcanoes.

Umubano

This is a splitter group of Amahoro gorilla family. The word Umubano denotes neighborliness and regardless of feud that led to its split, the two live harmoniously thus the word Umubano that denotes togetherness. This group is led by Ubumwe a dominant silverback gorilla. This habituated family is composed of 11 gorillas and treks through it require some physical fitness but not like a case of the Susa group.

Kwitonda group

This is led by a dominant Kwitonda silverback whose name denotes the humble one. Over 17 individuals thrive within this group. It is wanders around the slopes of Muhabura volcano and hiking through it also requires some physical wellness.

Hirwa

This is one of a recently introduced groups and splitter group from Agashya and Sabyinyo families. This habituated family was introduced on 17^th June 2006 when trackers spotted its creation from other rising gorillas from the 2 different groups-Agashya and Sabyinyo. The group is made of 9 members and they wander around the foothills of Gahinga and Sabyinyo volcanoes.

Ugenda

This group is known for its roaming behavior and thus its name Ugenda that denotes to the mobile being on the move. It is composed of 11 members and they live around Mount Bisoke and it is not that challenging to trek them as it requires minimal physical wellness in you.

Bwenge

Bwenge locally denotes wisdom and the group’s members can easily be tracked on the slopes of Mount Karisoke. Unlike other groups, Bwenge has experienced much loss especially when its 6 infants passed on. However, it is currently thriving with new births being registered. Interestingly, some of this gorilla group’s members also featured in the Gorilla in the Mist movie. This group was founded in 2007 when its group members broke off with Bwenge from the original group and other females joined him.

In conclusion, for any plans to visit Rwanda for a gorilla safari, the above habituated families should be a must for you to explore. Note one permit is equivalent to one habituated family.

HABITUATED GROUPS IN UGANDA

With nearly half the population of mountain gorillas that still thrive on earth today all confined in Uganda, a visit to this country for gorilla trekking rewards travel endeavors with life changing experiences. They are distributed with the two parks of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park that all straddle in southwestern side of this magical country. About 36 groups are found in Bwindi National Park alone most of them have been habituated and they are open for gorilla tourism with 2 more that have also been introduced for tourism and only one is available in Mgahinga National Park. In Bwindi National Park, treks are conducted with the 4 main trailheads of Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga and each of these regions has its own habituated families. The following are the habituated gorilla families in Uganda

Mubare group

Mubare family is the oldest habituated group in Bwindi and first to be opened for tourism in Uganda. This group falls within Buhoma sector and it became fully habituated in 1998. Initially, it featured about 12 members under the leadership of Ruhondeza. After sometime, it grew up to 18 individuals however, due to continued fights, most of its members were taken and only 5 members were left. It was till 2013 that 4 more other members joined the group and today, this group is composed of 9 members.

Habinyanja

Habinyanja was first explored around 1999 and it derived its name from the local word ‘Nyanja’ denoting to body of water. This group is known for its drama and commotion which usually comes due to power struggle between the dominant silverbacks. Splitting among gorillas is a common trait where others join or leave the family. However, they do not fight against the former family members in case they meet.

Rushegura group

This group came together in 2002 at a time one of the silverbacks decided to split off. About 12 members were habituated at a time with 5 females and derived its name from ebishegura. If you are looking for a calm group to explore then Rushegura should be a must for you to trek while on gorilla safari in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Today, this family comprises of 19 members with 1 silverback.

Bitukura group

Bitukura family derived its name from a river where it was first founded. Habituation exercise for this group began in 2007 and never took long for it to get ready for trekking. It is found in Ruhija trailhead and composed of 14 individuals with 4 silverbacks. Unlike other groups, this family took about 1 year and some months and it was ready for visitors to track. Before, it comprised of 24 individuals but as a result of disputes within the group, others broke off and joined other groups. Bitukura welcomed its newborn in the early 2013 and for interested trekkers; you can spend a night at Ruhija or nearby lodge in Buhoma to ease your connectivity to the trailhead to kick start your adventure.

Oruzogo group

This gorilla group also falls under Ruhija sector and it opened for tourism of recent around 2011. It is headed by Tibirikwata and features among a few most famous groups due to its playful and energetic juveniles and toddlers. It is composed of 23 individuals with 1 silverback.

Nshongi gorilla group

For those of you who wish to track gorillas in Rushaga, Nshongi group is that one family you to consider a must to track and you won’t regret afterwards. This gorilla group is famous for its many members that make up about 36 individuals. It was opened in 2009 and derived its name from River Nshongi. There are currently 18 members the fact that others broke off and joined to other families.

Mishaya gorilla group

This is a splitter families and lies within Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It broke off from Nshongi group around July 2010 with Mishaya silverback being its leader. Mishaya is a typical fighter and managed to grab more females from other non-habituated families. Today, this group boasts of about 7 members.

Kahungye

This is one of the best groups to track within Rushaga trailhead of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It is composed of 13 individuals with 3 silverbacks. Its dominant silverback is known as Rumansi that is also followed by other 2 old male gorillas-Rwigi and Ruhamuka. This habituated family was opened for tourism in 2011 and not more than a year it broke off forming the new Busingye group. Prior splitting, it comprised of 27 members with 3 silverbacks.

Bweza group

Before splitting, this group ranked the largest in Bwindi National Park. When Mishaya decided to break off, he walked away with many gorillas that reduced the vast number in Bweza group. Today, about 7 of them thrive here with 1 silverback.

Busingye group

A splitter group from Kahungye in 2012. The word Busingye denotes peace and this is different from the ambitious silverback in this group given his legendary fights with other families. He is known for showing his power and each time he encounters a wild group, he mercilessly grabs the female. This group is composed of 9 members with 1 silverback.

Kyaguliro group

This group mainly set for research but can be tracked when the other groups are fully booked. This gorilla group is comprised of 15 members and lies within Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Nyakagezi group

If you are heading to Mgahinga National Park for gorilla trekking then Nyakagezi group is the best for you to realize your dreams. This group is led by Mark silverback. Before, this group was known for its behavior of crossing to DR Congo however, it has settled down and can be tracked within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Nkuringo gorilla group

Nkuringo is named after Nkuringo area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It means the round hill referring to a hill where it was first spotted. It is composed of 19 members featuring about 2 silverbacks. It is perfect for those of you who may desire more challenging experiences. To trek through this group requires you to be physically well.

In addition to already habituated families, 2 more groups have also been opened for tourism in Bwindi National Park and they include Katwe and Christmas. If you are interested in new and authentic experiences then count these families a must to track and you won’t regret in life. Christmas group is led by Christmas silverback with about 9 members, 3 females and 1 baby. This group becomes the second habituated gorilla family in Nkuringo sector which are open for tourism. Katwe on the other hand is located in Buhoma sector of Bwindi National Park.

PACKING LIST FOR GORILLA TREKKING

When it comes to gorilla trekking, what you pack matters a lot. This primate adventure itself is a unique experience and it isn’t any ordinary nature walks that you have had in savanna grassland protected areas. While packing for this particular adventure, make sure that you start with essential items first whether you plan to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi National Park, Mgahinga National Park or Volcanoes National Park. For memorable gorilla experiences, the following items should be a must on your packing list.

Waterproof hiking boots

Gorilla trekking in Uganda, DR Congo or Rwanda is all about hiking through the thick tropical rainforests of Bwindi and Mgahinga National Park southwestern Uganda, Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park as well as the steep slopes. Given the kind of this adventure, ordinary shoes won’t work but waterproof hiking boots that are light weight are the best choice. Depending on season that you wish to trek gorillas, it can turn muddy when it rains and one way to get protected from slippery steep slopes and thick rainforest is for you to have waterproof hiking boots. Note, rains can be experienced at any time of the day given the kind of habitat where these creatures thrive from.

Garden gloves

The fact that the trek to see these magnificent primates takes you through the dense vegetation, at one point, you will need to have support especially when you fall off and the only option is the nearby plants of which these can be thorny or very itchy. For any plans to visit Volcanoes National Park or Bwindi National Park and Mgahinga National Park for gorilla trekking, a rain jacket should be a must.

Long sleeved shirts

Gorilla treks in Uganda, Rwanda and the DR Congo take you through hiking dense vegetation and while here, you will encounter stinging insects especially ants or perhaps falling tree branches. To safeguard yourself from such situations, you need long sleeved shirts/trousers that you tuck into socks/blouses and others.

Water and snacks

Gorilla treks may last you about 1 to 8 hours and this requires you to physically well. To help boost energy to make a complete hike, you need energy giving snacks and bottled water. Prior leaving the lodge that you will have an overnight stay ensure that you have packed lunch and enough drinking water.

First aid kit

This is significant to have as it will contain your prescribed medicines especially anti-malarial drugs, anti-diarrhea, cold medication, allergy remedies, painkillers, bandages and liniment, antiseptic cream and many more.

Besides, you need insect repellent to help protect yourself from stinging insects-mosquitoes, tsetse flies and others. For this case, you need RID or DEET.

Camera plus additional batteries

With only an hour of magical encounter that you will have, your camera should set and ready for action. However, not any camera is required here but that with no flash light and you need extra batteries to help replace the one that runs short of power and remember that you won’t find electricity and even you won’t find time to charge your camera while inside the forest.

Hat and sun glasses

At times, it can be very hot and a hat can do you some good job and sun glasses for strong sun rays. They may look optional but they significant while you are on gorilla safari.

Gorilla permit

While at the park headquarters, you will be required to present your permit for clearance and this means that you shouldn’t even forget it. Besides, you also need a valid passport and visa at least valid for six months or more.

Others include toiletries, waterproof daypack for your camera, binoculars, documents, packed lunch, long socks, sweaters, long pants and others.

In conclusion, gorilla trekking is ideally a lifetime experience and a lot is need of you to make it memorable of which what you pack matters a lot. With the above packing list, we believe that you will have enjoyable and unforgettable primate adventure while you are on safari in Africa.

PRIMATES IN UGANDA

While on safari in Uganda, primates are among a few most fascinating creatures that you shouldn’t miss to explore. They are a few most beautiful creatures that this magical country boasts of. Incredibly, there is a belief that these primates originated from Africa and a reason they are regarded as our closest relatives in the wild. They have a lot in common with human beings right from arms, legs, brains, fingers, toes and others. Today, Uganda is undoubtedly a very famous primate destination and their survival is favored by cool climatic conditions and thick rainforests which attract most of them. These creatures are at a higher risk as most of the forests are heavily destroyed which their main habitat is. The major primates for you to see while on safari in Uganda include;

Mountain gorillas

Mountain gorillas feature among Uganda’s top tourist attractions. Most visitors on safari in Uganda mainly come to see mountain gorillas making them the country’s star attractions. Over half of those that still live on earth today call the pearl of Africa their home and they are distributed within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These parks are situated suitably in southwestern side of the country along the Albertine rift valley just at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). To track these creatures, there are about 17 groups that have been habituated and readily set for visitor experiences in Uganda and in order for you to be part of this exciting and life changing experience; you need a permit which costs $600. A permit is what gives you a chance to track only one habituated family in a group of eight visitors and you have magical encounters.

Chimpanzees

These are regarded as our closest relatives just like gorillas. In Uganda, there are over 5000 of them that are widely distributed in different parts of the country. The best places to see these fascinating creatures while you are on safari in Uganda include Kibale Forest National Park which is situated in western side. This park comprises of over 1500 chimpanzees while the rest are shared by other sites. The other sites where you can catch a glimpse at these incredible primates include Budongo forest, Kalinzu forest near Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kyambura Gorge at Queen Elizabeth National Park, Semuliki valley national park, Uganda Wildlife Education Center, Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary among others.

Golden monkeys

Scientifically called cercopithecus mitis kandti, the golden monkeys are a few unique creatures of their own and only thrive within the Virunga Region that covers Virunga National Park in eastern DR Congo, Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda. This primate group weighs about 10-25 pounds and they come with golden body, cheeks, tails with black limbs, crown on their heads and tail end. They are a sub species of blue monkey and can be tracked around the bamboo forest. Their number isn’t yet known but they are estimated to be about 5000. Unlike mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, golden monkeys are not easy for one to capture their pictures as they are very jumpy and if you are to take their photos you have to be really sharp.

Olive baboons

They are scientifically known as papio Anubis which also belongs to a family cercopithecidae. These creatures are easily spotted around the park. In Africa, they are found in about 25 countries and mainly thrive within savannas, steppes and forests. Their common name is derived from its coat color that is a shade of green grey at a distance and they have several ways of communicating, both vocal and non-vocal. You can spot these incredible and playful creatures in most of parks in Uganda.

Black and white colobus monkeys

These are commonly spotted while you are on safari in Uganda. They come in black and white color and thrive in small groups. You can find them in Entebbe Botanical Gardens and most parks in Uganda as well as a rare colobus monkey that is unique to Rwenzori Mountains.

L’Hoest monkeys

These are mainly popular as mountain monkeys or cercopithecus lhoesti and mostly spotted within the montane forests in Albertine rift areas that cover the southwestern parts of Uganda. They thrive within the montane tropical rainforest both primary and secondary forest. While on primate safari in Uganda, you can get these creatures with Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Rwenzori Mountains Foothills and others.

Blue monkeys

These are also best known as the cercopithecus mitis which belongs to the old world monkey ancestry and lives in most parts of east and central Africa. They come in dark blue grey color, white throat and white patch on their chests. They are found mostly in many parks of Uganda except Murchison Falls National Park and Lake Mburo National Park. These creatures thrive in troops of 4 to 12 and about 20 different types of guenon monkeys exist and 3 of them thrive in Uganda.

The others include De Brazza’s monkeys, grey cheeked mangabeys, patas monkeys, colobus monkeys and red tailed monkeys while the nocturnal primates include bush babies, pottos among others.

In conclusion, Uganda features variety of primate species for you to catch a glimpse while on safari in Africa. Most of them can be spotted in most national parks or forested areas in Uganda.
